How to File Motions and Other Documents

Finding the Right Event

Please review the list of available events before selecting, "Document," "Generic Motion" or "Generic Application" to see if a more specific event matches the relief requested in the motion or application. In addition, the "Search" menu can be utilized to find a matching event within CM/ECF.

Many events in CM/ECF will prompt you to input specific information that will be recorded in the case (as in the examples listed below), or they are in place to ensure specific functionality occurs, or specific data is collected, in CM/ECF.

Guidance for Specific Filings

Applications to Employ

The Employ event in the Motions/Applications menu should be used to file applications to employ in a case. When you choose this event, you will be prompted to enter the name of the individual professional to be employed and the type of professional (e.g., auctioneer). This information will be reflected in docket text upon submission of the filing.

Applications for Compensation

The Compensation event in the Motions/Applications menu should be used to file applications to compensate professionals employed in the case.

Party Selection

To select the correct party when docketing this event, review the following rules:

  • If you are the attorney filing for compensation on your own behalf, select the party(s) you represent.
  • If you are the attorney filing for compensation for another professional, select that party.
  • If you are the case trustee filing for compensation on your own behalf, select yourself.
  • If you are the case trustee filing for compensation for another professional, select yourself and that party.

The professional should have been entered in the case when the application to employ was granted. If the professional does not appear, you will be able to add them to the case at this time.

Fees and Expenses

You will also be prompted to enter the fees and expenses for each party selected earlier when docketing the Compensation event. Data entered on this screen is recorded in the professional fees and expenses record for inclusion on Professional Fees Applied For/Awarded report. Note that each party selected for compensation will appear.

  • If the applicant is also the filer, ensure the Filer checkbox is selected.
  • Ensure the Type of professional is selected. Attorneys should choose "Debtor's Attorney," "Creditor's Attorney," or "Trustee's Attorney."
  • Enter the date range or date (From and To) for services performed if applicable.
  • Enter the fee and expense requests listed in the application. Do not use a dollar sign ($) or commas.

If you are the case trustee filing on behalf of another professional, check the Filer box beneath your name but do not include date(s) or fee and expense information under your name. Only include this information for the professional for which compensation is requested.
