DISTRICT COURT APPOINTS NEW CHIEF BANKRUPTCY JUDGE FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF OHIO

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio has appointed the Honorable John E. Hoffman, Jr., to serve a seven-year term as Chief Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Ohio, effective October 27, 2021. Judge Hoffman was appointed to the bench in 2000 and presides in Columbus. He succeeds the Honorable Jeffery P. Hopkins, who served a seven-year term beginning October 27, 2014. Judge Hopkins will resume service as an active judge in Cincinnati.

The Court and its staff are extremely grateful to Judge Hopkins for the outstanding leadership that he provided over the last seven years. He guided the Court through the implementation of several initiatives. Initiatives adopted during his tenure include, without limitation, a district-wide docketing program to establish uniform procedures for all Court locations, the Attorney Advisory Committee, procedures for complex chapter 11 cases, two mediation programs, and several internal initiatives. He also led the Court through a government shutdown and the first nineteen months of a global pandemic. Judge Hopkins’ positive impact on Court operations will extend well beyond his tenure as Chief Judge.
