Effect of REAL ID Implementation on Courthouse Entry Requirements

Monday, April 7, 2025

Beginning May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act (“Act”) will restrict access to certain federal facilities without compliant identification; however, the Act contains an exception for access to court proceedings and services. These activities are considered constitutionally protected and do not require identification compliant with the Act.

Accordingly, the Act does not affect the courthouse entry requirements to any of the courthouses of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Ohio, including the Columbus courthouse when it is relocated to the John W. Bricker Federal Building.  Although compliant identification is not required, compliant identification is an acceptable form of identification for courthouse entry.
